Interconti hotel chain: success thanks to franchising

The world’s largest hotel chain, Intercontinental, succeeded in considerably increasing both its turnover and profits during the first quarter of the year. According to a report in the newspaper, the Handelsblatt, these results can, for the most part, be explained by the increased number of people taking both business trips and holidays.

The figures for Europe, however, did not entirely reflect this positive development. One of the reasons for Intercontinental’s success is its franchising policy: since 2003, the company has been selling its hotels and has been running more and more businesses with the help of franchisees.

Intercontinental has 3,600 hotels across the globe which are run under different brand names such as Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn. In Germany, for example, Interconti is the third most important hotel business behind Dorint and Best Western, which also runs its hotels through franchising.
