Subway UK with ambitious expansion plans

In a recent press release, the SUBWAY franchise chain has announced that it now has more than 1,000 stores in the UK & Ireland employing over 15,000 people. The franchise chain has enjoyed rapid growth with the number of its restaurants doubling over the last 24 months and it is not planning to stop here: the company’s medium-term aim is to have set up a further 1,000 restaurants by 2010.

According to the information provided by the company, it currently has more restaurants in the UK & Ireland than competitors such as KFC, Pizza Hut and Burger King and is opening, on average, six stores a week. It is also, the company says, anticipating that it will have overtaken McDonald’s – as far as restaurant count is concerned – by the middle of 2008.

The first SUBWAY® restaurant in the UK opened up in Brighton in January 1996. Kevin Graham, regional director for Europe, Israel and South Africa, commented, “The level of growth we’ve experienced in the UK and Ireland is a fantastic achievement. It reflects the entrepreneurial spirit of the Development Agents and franchisees, together with the power of the SUBWAY brand and the strength of its systems, policies and procedures.” The SUBWAY chain is the world’s largest submarine sandwich franchise, with more than 27,800 locations in over 86 countries.
