McDonald’s franchise: growth in profits despite fall in sales

As a result of selling off shares, the world’s largest fast-food chain, McDonald’s, has ended the first quarter of 2009 with a slight increase in earnings. According to a report published on the website, wirtschaftsportal, the Group earned 756 million euros in the first three months of this year – a slight increase compared to the same period last year.

Information given in the report reveals that the chain was able to compensate for its fall in sales (a decrease of almost 13 percent) by selling off its shares in Redbox Automated Retail. Having enjoyed a steady growth in sales for many years, this is the first time that McDonalds has had to face such a large drop in turnover. (kbp)
