Kentucky Fried Chicken helping to change people’s lives
For the third year running, the Kentucky Fried Chicken Foundation, an independent non-profit foundation established by KFC, has been searching for the 2008 KFC Colonel's Scholars®. According to information provided by the company, the programme looks for accomplished high school seniors who are planning to attend a public in-state college or university. Those lucky enough to be selected will receive up to $20,000 over four years in order to complete a bachelor's degree.
The programme, which KFC is planning to run every year, proved to be a great success last year with 51 high school students from 30 different states across the USA being given scholarships. A further 100 Colonel's Scholars are expected to be chosen this year almost doubling the number of students currently receiving assistance from the programme.
With the deadline for applications now passed, the Kentucky Fried Chicken Foundation Board will - with the help of a neutral educational company - be sorting through the applications to choose this year’s 100 scholars. The names of the winners are to be announced in May. Fifty of the scholarships are to be awarded to national winners. The other 50 are being funded by franchisees and will be awarded to scholars in the franchisees’ local markets.
The KFC Corporation, which is based in Louisville, Ky., is one of the world's most popular franchise chicken restaurant chains. There are, the company says, more than 14,000 KFC outlets in more than 80 countries and territories around the world.
