Express Oil Change steps up its south-east expansion plans

Express Oil Change LLC announced last month that it is intending to grant up to 12 new franchises in the Southeast in 2008 and to open at least that many new stores through existing franchisees this year. Jerry Perch, director of franchise sales for the company, also said that Express Oil Change's focus this year will be on helping its franchisees expand their footprint and build their wealth, rather than opening any more corporate-owned stores in Alabama.

At this year’s annual convention held in Birmingham, the company reported that same store sales in 2007 rose nearly 6 percent and averaged $814,000 per store. The top half of the chain averaged more than $1 million in sales per store last year, while the top 25 percent averaged $1.2 million. Half of the million-dollar stores are, the company said, owned by franchisees.

Express Oil Change, which is based in Birmingham and recently moved its head office to Hoover, owns 60 oil-change and service centers in Alabama and has 106 franchise-run stores in 11 states. The company was founded in the 1970s by Jim Lunceford who sold the business to Ricky Brooks and Joe Watson, the largest franchise developers in the chain, in 1996.
