Ben & Jerry's handing out free ice-cream

The Ben & Jerry's franchise system in Germany began an unusual campaign on 25th April 2006: pedestrians, cyclists and skateboarders are being given ice-cream for free. The branches in Hamburg, Cologne, Munich, Düsseldorf, Bochum and Berlin are taking part and cyclists are also being given the opportunity to have their bicycles checked by a mechanic.

The background to this campaign is the commitment of the system’s founders, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, towards conserving the environment. By introducing worldwide campaigns, they are hoping to make the public more aware of the dangers of global warming using the motto: “Don't burn it, eat it”. The idea began in 2002 in the USA, when, for example, Ben & Jerry's worked together with the Dave Matthews Band and with its “Lick Global Warming”.
