Woolworths to return with a franchise concept
According to a report published by the Handelsblatt newspaper, Woolworths, the chain of retail shops that originated in the UK and became insolvent in 2008, is looking at re-starting its business. The newspaper article reports that Shop Direct, an Internet mail order company, is intending to set up several shops next year with the overall aim of opening up to 200 branches.
However, the shops are not to be run by the company itself but by franchisees. According to the Handelsblatt, Woolworths was often the only retailer in some towns. Shop Direct’s franchise concept will, therefore, be targeted at rural areas. (kbp)
