Poland: strong increase in franchise-run restaurants
According to a report issued by ARSS, a consultancy business for franchise networks, the number of franchise-run restaurants in Poland grew by almost 50 percent last year to a total of 70 businesses. The total number of all franchise businesses increased by 33 percent to around 2,000.
Despite this strong growth, restaurant franchising in Poland is still in the early stages of development: franchise networks still only make up only around two percent of the branch’s total turnover; in the USA this figure lies at approx. 60 percent. There is, ARSS says, great potential for growth. Coffee shop chains grew especially quickly last year with ten new chains being launched onto the market in 2007 including Costa Coffee, Cava, Sphinx, Caffe Vergnano 1882, Pierogeria and iCoffee. Starbucks, the largest US coffee shop chain, is also planning to enter the Polish market. The largest franchise business on the Polish restaurant market is Fornetti (300 outlets) followed by McDonalds (210) and Da Grasso (144).
