Mothercare proving to be a success both at home and abroad:
According to a report published on the Internet portal, theretailbulletin.com, Mothercare, the well-known retailers of products for mothers and babies, has enjoyed a year of success. Company group sales increased by 35.8 per cent to £676.8 million with like-for-like sales in the UK rising by 2.9 per cent and overseas franchisee sales jumping up on a like-for-like basis by 12 per cent to £286.8 million.
Mothercare chief executive, Ben Gordon, has announced that the company is entering a “new growth phase”. One of the reasons for this success, the report says, has been the successful acquisition of Early Learning Centre with the synergy effects coming earlier and being higher than expected.
Over the last 12 months, 77 new franchise stores were opened up so that the network now consists of 494 units in 48 countries. With the network expanding so quickly overseas, international sales are becoming more and more important – at present they make up around 40 per cent of the group’s turnover but this figure is expected to increase. The company is looking to continue this momentum and is expecting to set up further stores abroad, for example in India and China.
