McDonald's and Subway: the fastest growing franchise systems
For the eighth time now, the specialist magazine, FoodService Europe & Middle East, has published its list of the 111 largest food-service players in Europe. According to an article on the Internet portal, cafefuture.net, the list is headed by McDonald's for absolute growth and by Subway for relative growth.
The report puts Germany as being the world’s export leaders for technical products but it is relatively weak in the area of food services (a mere six percent share). The USA heads this sector with a 31 percent share of the market followed by the United Kingdom with 26 percent.
What is noticeable is that only 40 of the 111 largest players are not internationally active. Food service companies generally start internationalizing their businesses by moving into the neighbouring countries and very often by using franchising.
