Franchise branch continues to grow
Franchising is expanding throughout Europe. According to a report published by the news agency, Pressetext, the most recent market surveys have revealed that the franchise branch has a high number of employees and a turnover amounting to billions of euros. In Germany, for example, there are around 430,000 people working in franchise businesses generating an overall turnover of 39.6 billion euros; in Austria more than 100,000 employees achieve total sales of 4.5 billion euros.
“The service branch has the lion’s share making up 50 percent of the franchise branch. The Top 20 businesses, for example, include education (private tuition, study groups, language schools) and tourism,” Pascale Taube, spokeswoman at the German Franchise Association (DFV), said to the news agency. According to the latest statistics published by the Austrian Franchise Association, there are more than 6,900 franchise locations in Austria with franchisees employing on average six people per outlet.
The number of franchise networks in Austria has increased tenfold since the 80s. At the end of 2006, the number of registered franchise networks lay at 390 – five percent more than in 2004. There are currently a total of 5,950 Austrian franchisees, most of whom work in the textile and fashion branches, followed by the restaurant business and teaching and training.
