Costa Coffee to move into Russia

In a recent announcement, Whitbread has stated that it is planning to launch the Costa Coffee shop chain onto the Russian market using a joint venture. According to the information provided by the company, the new agreement has been concluded between Whitbread and Rosinter and plans are to set up more than 200 Costa franchise stores over the next five years.

It will be concentrating on Moscow and Saint Petersburg during the first twelve months and will then expand into other Russian regions. The two partners, Whitbread says, also intend to set up Costa stores in Ukraine and Belarus but this shall be implemented at a later date. The first Costa flagship store is due to open in Pushkin Square in Moscow in early 2008.

John Derkach, managing director at Costa, commented on this deal saying, “Costa has become a part of daily life for millions of customers worldwide with a presence in 20 countries, and this new agreement with Rosinter clearly demonstrates our ongoing ambition to be a global coffee brand.”

Costa was founded in 1971 by Sergio and Bruno Costa and now belongs to Whitbread PLC. Costa currently operates 923 stores with 268 in 20 overseas markets. According to the company, Costa is the largest and fastest growing coffee shop chain in the UK with 655 stores. This year Costa won the award for Best International Franchise Operator 2007.
