An award for the Thresher Group
The Thresher Group announced recently that it had been presented with an award for Education at the recent International Wine Challenge Awards dinner. Charles Metcalfe, one of the Chairmen of the IWC, is quoted as saying that the judging panel had been so impressed by one company’s achievement in the field of staff education that they wanted them to be recognized by a new award, introduced this year.
This award recognizes of the range of comprehensive staff training schemes which is compulsory for all employees of the Thresher Group. Such courses include Thresher Wine School, the Thresher Product Knowledge Foundation Certificate as well as various stages of the WSET courses. The Thresher Wine School, launched in December 2006, consists of a three-hour workshop which also covers a tasting session on all the major grape varieties. Over 1,100 Thresher Group employees have taken part in such a course since the inception of the school.
The Thresher Group, which includes the retail brands Threshers and The Local off-licences, is one of the UK’s leading independent specialist drinks retailers. It has around 2,000 stores across the country and serves, it says, more than 150 million customers a year.
