The pharmaceutical wholesalers, Celesio, are now looking to establish itself on the Swedish market through its DocMorris chain of pharmacies. According to a report published in the Financial Times Deutschland, the company is planning to set up between 20 and 30 pharmacies a year to create a network of around 100 pharmacies over the medium term. These expansion plans are being handled by Celesio’s Norwegian subsidiary, Norsk Medisinaldepot. DocMorris is looking to set up its first locations once the regulatory authorities have approved the move; a specific date was not named.
Sweden is, alongside Germany and Ireland, the third market in which DocMorris is active. In Germany, the 150 DocMorris pharmacies are run using partnership agreements similar to a franchise model. According to the Financial Times Deutschland, DocMorris is also the largest mail-order pharmacy in Europe. In 2007, Celesio purchased 90 percent of the shares in the company, which is based in the Netherlands. (kbp)
