It is a question asked by a candidate interested in the food industry; but
the answer concerns everyone.
His question: “by becoming a franchisee (food
industry: catering, butchery), will I loose my freedom? How can I get supplies?
What will be my obligations in the fitting out of the point of sale?”
Our answer:
What do you mean when you say liberty? It is a matter of nuances.
Whether you are independent and on your own, or independent and franchisee, you are independent. Indeed, franchisors do not need docile and credulous persons; they need autonomous entrepreneurs, and franchise contracts always insist on the parties’ independence.
Whether you are independent and on your own, or independent and franchisee, you will have to face some constraints. Constraints of solitude on the one hand and constraints of group work on the other hand.
Actually, when you choose to be a franchisee, you choose:
• To
benefit of advantages; to duplicate a proven formula; to benefit from a brand
name; to benefit from the experience and know how of the franchisee; to take
advantage of the network’s size; to count on the franchisor’s training and
assistance, as well as on the advice of your colleague franchisees.
• To
accept constraints. Not to buy and sell anything; not to decorate anyhow…why is
that? Because if the franchise works well, it is because the promise it did to
its clients was fulfilled. It would thus be stupid to join a network and not
respect the rules which underline its success. It would also be dangerous to
already established franchisees because the promise made to the consumer will
not be fulfilled, at least not fully.
This is how the brand image is
weakened, leading to a less attractive network; it is clear now why one would
not want to adhere to such a network.
WHAT ACCOUNTS FOR THE SUCCESS OF A NETWORK IS FIRST OF ALL QUALITY, AND THE JUSTIFICATION OF THE CONSTRAINTS THAT THE FRANCHISEE HAS TO BIND BY IN ORDER TO KEEP THE PROMISE MADE TO THE CONSUMER AND RESPECT THE INTERESTS OF OTHER FRANCHISEES;
